Muuga Port region begins to smell the air of eNoses

Lennart Verhoef News

eNose tallinn

Last week 21 eNoses and 4 windsensors were installed in the Muuga Port and Maardu region in Estonia. The innovative electronic nose sensors, or eNoses can be used to continuously monitor the chemical composition in ambient air. The eNoses are installed at various locations around terminals, industry and residential area to monitor both odorous and non-odorous gas emissions.

The positions of the eNoses can be changed, if necessary, depending on the area most problems are detected. A similar system operates in the Port of Rotterdam in the Netherlands since 2008 (We-nose).

“The Rotterdam port area now has 150 eNoses, and are planning to increase the number to around 300 eNoses in 2016. /…/ Partly due to this eNose network and cooperation of all stakeholders in the port area (EPA, companies, municipalities and port authority) there are less complaints,” explains Lennart Verhoef of Comon Invent, Business Development “ETV.

TEDx eNose that can sniff out disease – Simon Bootsma

Lennart Verhoef News

During TEDx Johannesburg last November 2015 our CEO Simon Bootsma had the privilege to talk about the eNose technology and its applicability in the medical sector.

Our exhaled breath contains more clues about the state of our health than most of us imagine. If there is so much information in the air that we breathe out, how then could we use technology to unlock it? Us humans have developed all sorts of technologies that help to expand our senses. But somehow we have made little progress to expand the sense of smell. Until now, that is.

When the only constant is change

Lennart Verhoef News

IMG_2232The world is changing rapidly. Developments are coming one upon the other, more rapidly than ever before. This makes the future unpredictable, but also rich in opportunities, writes Carla Jong, environmental issues project manager and Nataly Katan, new business project manager, Port of Amsterdam.

In a number of different areas, transitions, evolutions, and reversals in trends are occurring, which have an impact on the port – for example the energy transition, raw materials shortages, the rise of the circular economy, the continuing increase in scale in shipping, urbanisation and new technologies such as big data, robotics and 3D printing.

These kinds of developments have a critical impact on which raw materials will be important, the flow of logistics, which locations will come onto or fall off the radar and what knowledge will be valuable. All this adds up to a dynamic environment, in which it is difficult to predict what the nature, scope and speed of developments will be, and where exactly new opportunities will emerge. Flexibility is key.
